MUSIC & LIFE

Drawing

             Music

Many artists begin with a concept and then create a work. Agenor’s process seems almost the reverse. The work emerges first—from attentive listening—and meaning reveals itself afterward.

In a figurative sense, the relationship between a musical composition and an instrument resembles that of a canvas and the marks it bears. This is why the analogy with abstract art feels so natural. this music often behaves like abstract painting, where relationships between color, shape, and surface create a sense of suspension and ambiguity.

Agenor’s contemporary sensibility reveals a deep attention to touch, resonance, and texture. Yet the music is equally guided by the instincts of spontaneous creation, where each gesture arises from the living moment. He shifts composition away from a purely intellectual process toward a physical and tactile act. Just as a painter responds to the texture of the canvas, the absorption of the paint, and the movement of the hand, Garcia’s music emerges from a direct encounter with the instrument.

The listener is invited not merely to hear a piece of music, but to witness the unfolding of a process—a cinematic landscape taking shape in real time.

This process finds a clear expression in LILT, a work that emerged in real time, created by the composer in the act of recording, and filmed by the filmmaker Renato Lombardi.

There is also a spiritual dimension to this approach, where music becomes an event—something that appears, unfolds, and disappears, leaving behind a subtle transformation in the listener.

Agenor Garcia worked as an architect while studying music.

His passion for design and painting led him to work on a conceptual aesthetic that breaks away from traditional notation.

“I DON'T WRITE MUSIC, I DRAW IT.”

The result is a collection of drawings from conceptual to abstract, produced in many different media, most commonly ink, pencil, and charcoal on paper.

Although he says it is impossible not to be influenced, he tries to be a stylistic individual, only concerned with techniques that lead to a better texture.

He uses rhythmic pattern as the main subject, while melody and harmony surround it as an embellishment. Also, the employment of parallel chords, which are essentially not harmony but "chord melodies" as well the "whole tones like" harmonies, may have been inspired by the music of Alban Berg.

"SILENCE ALSO EXPRESSES EMOTIONS AND CAN BE A WAY TO RELAY A MESSAGE"

His latest records were produced by Glen Kolotikin, Grammy-awarded, and over 20 gold and platinum albums to his credit (Glenn Gould, Miles Davis, Barbra Streisand, among others).

STRONGLY MELODIC GROUND

"The strongly melodic grounds, sometimes conceal the harmony and rhythm shifts he uses, but that is precisely what establishes Agenor Garcia in the vein of

Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett."
